2-Month-Old Hospitalized with Alcohol Poisoning

COLORADO SPRINGS --

A 2-month-old baby was hospitalized with a blood-alcohol level more than four times the legal limit for an adult driver.

Memorial Hospital spokeswoman Sharon Miracle said Monday she did not know the child's condition. She could not confirm earlier reports that the girl was expected to recover.

"Any time you give alcohol to a child, and at that quantity, it is extremely dangerous. It's virtually a poison," Miracle said.

The infant was taken to Memorial early Sunday with a 0.364 blood-alcohol level.

Police were investigating how she ingested the alcohol. Officers said the baby's mother had given conflicting stories.

Authorities said they believe the mother's boyfriend dropped her and the child off at the hospital and left. His whereabouts were unknown.

No names were released.

The baby was being treated in the hospital's intensive-care unit. She has been placed in the custody of the El Paso County Department of Human Services, police spokesman Lt. Rafael Cintron said.

A Colorado driver is considered legally drunk with a blood-alcohol level of 0.08.
